The 2nd International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize 2017

Through this competition, the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Berlin would like to invite composers to create a work for Korean und Western instruments.

Considering the 1st International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize 2016 as a successful stepping stone, the creative activities of young composers ought to be fostered and the repertoire of new works which deal with traditional Korean and Western instruments ought to be expanded and advanced.

The competition is named after the Korean composer Professor Younghi Pagh-Paan who has been living in Germany for several decades and who has created numerous new works based on traditional Korean music. She has been playing a leading role as a pioneer of the international music scene.

1. Conditions of participation

persons who were born after 1st January 1972 (regardless of nationality)

2. Type of composition

a) 1 work for an ensemble (6 musicians maximum) of traditional Korean and Western instruments with a focus on traditional Korean instruments (duration: 15 minutes maximum) or
b) 1 solo concert or 1 concert for several soloists for traditional Korean orchestra and Western instruments (the latter - Western instruments - is optional). At least one of the solo parts must be composed for traditional Korean instruments (duration: 15 minutes maximum).

3. Required documents (application is only possible via e-mail)

a) 1 copy of the official application form

b) Full score and parts of the different instruments
c) explanation of the work (about 1 page)
d) CV of the composer

4. Guidelines for the submittance of the documents

a) The composition must have been written within the last five years.
b) Works that were already publicly performed or had their public debut are admitted to this competition as long as they were not already awarded at other competitions.
c) Submittance of only 1 work per person
d) When submitting the score, there must be a separate cover sheet on which the title of the composition and the name of the composer are noted down.
e) The evaluation of the score is anonymous. Therefore, on the score, only the title of the composition should be indicated but not the name of the composer.
f) If any candidate submits any false information, his or her appointment as a winner may be canceled even after the announcement of the results.

6. Evaluation and announcement of the chosen compositions

a) evaluation period: 9 October (Mon) ~ 25 October (Wed) 2017
b) evaluation method: commissioning of a jury by the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea which consists out of three people
c) announcement of the chosen works: 30 October 2017 personal notification of the candidates and announcement on the homepage of the Cultural Department (www.kulturkorea.org)

7. Awards

a) 1st Prize, 1 person
- performance at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonics
- prize money: 4000 Euro + return flight ticket from Incheon to Berlin (the cost for accommodation is not included)

b) 2nd Prize, 1 person
- performance at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonics
- prize money: 2000 Euro + return flight ticket from Incheon to Berlin (the cost for accommodation is not included)
c) 3rd Prize, 1 person
- performance at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonics - prize money: 1000 Euro

8. Award ceremony and concert

a) time: 11 December 2017, 8 pm (the exact date of the concert will be announced later)
b) venue: Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonics
Joint performance with the Chungju Traditional Music Orchestra

2017년 <제2회 국제박영희 작곡상> 작품을 공모합니다.

2016년 동 작곡상의 성공적인 시작을 발판삼아 주독일한국문화원은 동∙서양의 악기들이 만들어 내는 새로운 음향 속에서 젊은 작곡가들이 자신의 정체성을 형성하여 창작활동을 하는 길을 지원하고자 합니다.이 작곡상의 명칭은 지난 수십 년간 한국전통음악을 바탕으로 국제적 음악교류에 앞장서온 재독 작곡가 박영희 교수의 뜻을 기리기 위해 만들어졌습니다.

ㅇ 공모 개요

1. 참가 자격

가. 1972.1월 1일 이후 출생자(국적 불문)

2. 공모 작품

가. 국악기가 주요 파트/솔로로 연주되는 실내악(최대 6인, 최대 15분)
나. 국악 관현악 협주곡(최대 15분)
- 공통 : 국악 관현악 편성
- 선택 : 서양악기, 국악기 등 협연
※ 서양악기도 협연가능하나 국악기와 같이 협연하여야함.

4. 서류 제출시 유의사항

가. 제출 작품은 지난 5년 이내 작곡된 작품으로서, 타 공모전에 수상되지 않았어야 함.
나. 1인 1곡만 제출 가능함
다. 악보 제출시 작품/작곡자명이 표기된 별도의 커버 페이지가 포함되 어야 함
라. 제출된 악보는 익명으로 심사함. 따라서 악보에는 작품명만 표기하 여야 하며 작곡가의 이름이나 출신학교를 추정할 수 있는 표기나 오선지 등을 사용할 수 없음
마. 선정 결과 발표 이후라도 기재내용이 허위로 판명될 경우 선정을 취소함
